Shin-Yong Kang, CPA

Shin-Yong Kang graduated from Seoul National University and spent several years working at a brokerage firm. In the 1980’s, Shin-Yong Kang immigrated to the United States with dreams of a better life. He knew America was a land of opportunity and a country where he can achieve success through hard work and determination.

When Shin-Yong Kang arrived in America, few acknowledged his degree from a Korean university or his work experience at a Korean firm. He faced prejudice and numerous rejections, but he refused to give up. He enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served for 5 years. While in the Army, he enrolled in the University of Maryland and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After his honorable discharge, he pursued a career in accounting.

Since starting his firm in 1992, Shin-Yong Kang has served thousands of individuals and business owners, providing accounting services, tax advice, and business consulting. Today, the firm services a broad client base from many different industries, including but not limited to wholesalers and retailers, gas stations, hotels, homeowners association, non-profit entities, and entertainers.

Shin-Yong Kang has been serving the Korean community, not only as a CPA, but also as a community activist. During the 1992 Los Angeles riots, he volunteered to guard Korean markets and other establishments central to the Korean community. In its aftermath, he reaffirmed his commitment to the community, and he has served on the boards of many community organizations. In 2003, he served as the president of the Korean American CPA Society of Southern California. In 2018, he served as the president of the Seoul National University Alumni Association of Southern California.

Outside his work and family, Shin-Yong Kang enjoys playing tennis and writing. He plays tennis every morning before work, and in 2016, he served as the president of the Korean American Tennis Association. In 2017 he published a collection of essays entitled Beauty in Three Second (translated from Korean), and he is a director of the Korean Essayist Association of America.
